Ballet is a specific academic dance form and technique which is taught in ballet schools according to specific methods. There are many ballet schools around the world that specialize in various styles of ballet and different techniques. Works of dance choreographed using this technique are called ballets, and usually include dance, mime, acting and music (usually orchestral but occasionally vocal). Ballet is best known for its unique features and techniques, such as pointe work, turn-out of the legs, and high extensions; its graceful, flowing, precise movements; and its ethereal qualities.

Jazz Dance is a North American form of vernacular dancing performed to the rhythms of jazz. It is a style that swings, owing its origins to African and Caribbean forms of dance, blended with European influences. It is a popular dance style, used in musical shows on Broadway and in the UK (eg Cats, 1982). Jazz dance emphasizes fast, accurate footwork with the feet parallel, and exaggerated movements of individual body parts, with a flexible torso and body line.

Tap Dance was developed in the United States during the nineteenth century, and is popular nowadays in many parts of the world. The name comes from the tapping sound made when the small metal plates on the dancer's shoes touch a hard floor. This lively, rhythmic tapping makes the performer not just a dancer, but also a percussive musician. It is derived from the traditional clog dance of northern England, the jigs and reels of Ireland and Scotland, and possibly the rhythmic foot stamping of African dances.

Lyrical Dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques. Lyrical dance challenges choreographers and dancers to use motion to interpret music and express emotion. A lyrical dancer's movements attempt to show the meaning of the music.

Lyrical dance is an unusual dance form in that it has no particular history. It is the coming together of ballet, rock, punk, swing, jazz, and modern, for the most part and is performed to music with lyrics. The lyrics of a song are the driving force for the inspiration of the movement. Choreography is often emotional, gripping, and delicate all at the same time.

Hip-Hop Dance refers to dance styles, mainly street dance styles, primarily danced to hip hop music, or that have evolved as a part of the hip hop culture. The first and original dance associated with hip hop is breakdance, which appeared in New York City during the early 1970s and truly became a cornerstone (or "element") of hip hop as a culture. In the 1990s, as hip hop music took new forms, new dance styles began appearing, most of them danced in an upright manner in contrast to breakdance with its many ground moves.
